in syun, I transcribe voice recordings I made when my maternal grandmother and I practiced chinese calligraphy together. these are the last recordings I made with her before she passed on. as we write, she begins to speak, sharing her past with me in vivid fragments, meandering, forgetting and recalling. I'm scrambling to grasp everything I hear, everything she's telling me, all these stories, every single inflection.
through the act of writing, syun is a meditation upon speech, memory, impermanence, and the state of being at a loss for words. -- syun performance 45 minutes concept / choreography / performance : jee chan with : 蕭曼兒 Seow Mok Jee things & space : stefan pente for the 25 year anniversary of TANZNACHT BERLIN presented by Tanzfabrik Berlin Uferstudios, Berlin 8 - 9 September 2023 |
